  • White tongue or bad breath on the tongue is an indication of various things. It can be due to a buildup of food debris, oral thrush, poor hygiene, leukoplakia and syphilis. However, most of the time, bad breath can be due to various medical conditions. Therefore, there are several factors that may cause the development of breath odor and this should be addressed immediately.

    Dead cells, debris and bacteria…
Bad breath from the tongue can be very alarming if white patches are present. This can be a sign of poor oral hygiene. This can cause dead cells, debris and bacteria to grow and develop in your tongue. Aside from a poor oral hygiene, foul breath can be due to excessive mouth breathing, dehydration, smoking, fever and excessive alcohol consumption. All these can cause the papillae to become inflamed where tiny bumps may appear. Papillae inflammation can definitely cause nasty smelling breath.

    Yeast infection or oral thrush?

White coating on your tongue can be an indication that you are suffering from a yeast infection or oral thrush. This condition often affects children and adults with weak immune system. Oral thrush is also associated with prolonged use of certain medications like corticosteroids and antibiotics. Aside from that, it can also be due to planus, oral lichen, geographic tongue, leukoplakia and syphilis. Leukoplakia is a precursor of cancer. Lichen planus, on the other hand, is associated with autoimmune disorders that can cause the mouth to become sore and irritated.

    Tongue scraper…

Bad breath from the tongue can only be treated if you are aware of what is actually causing it. If the problem is not associated with any medical issue, then you can simply clean your tongue using a tongue scraper or brush your tongue regularly. Using a tongue scraper is also effective when trying to remove the white coating on its surface. After scraping your tongue, make sure to use a mouthwash with antibacterial properties.

    Acidophilus bacteria…

If bad breath from the tongue is due to oral thrush or yeast infection, appropriate treatment is required. You can determine if the white coating is due to oral thrush by scraping the surface of your tongue. If the coating scrapes off and is left with a reddened area, then you are probably suffering from oral thrush or yeast infection. Make sure to consult your physician immediately for the treatment of oral thrush. Your physician might recommend anti-fungal medications or you can also eat plain yogurt for yeast infection. Plain yogurt contains acidophilus bacteria, which is helpful in preventing the growth of Candida albicans.

    Garlic and natural probiotic…

Another effective remedy for bad breath from the tongue is garlic, as it contains natural probiotic. If the condition is not because of oral thrush or poor hygiene, then visiting your physician can be very helpful. This is because the problem might be due to an underlying medical condition. Consulting your physician allows him/her to run diagnostic testing to determine what is causing your tongue problem and to determine the right treatment for it.
