  • Last year my girlfriends and I had a New York "beauty day" where we all had manicures, blow outs, and our eyebrows done before hitting the town for a fun girls night out.
After we left the brow salon, my girlfriend Amber and I were both disappointed to discover our brows were too thin, thanks to an overzealous technician. Fast forward sixteen months and I'm still feeling the pain of that experience. Blame it on age, or possibly tweezer abuse, but my eyebrows are still growing back in.
On my most recent visit to New York City in January I landed at Sania's Brow Bar in the chair of brow specialist Sania Vucetaj, thanks to a recommendation from Teen Vogue beauty director Eva Chen.
Sania was the master brow specialist at Bergdorf Goodman for years before opening her own brow bar at 18 West 56th Street in Manhattan. In Sania's chair I learned a few tips on how to maintain brows during a "growing out" phase:

    1. Keep lotion away from brow areas. This includes foundation, moisturizer, sunblock and any other cream that will clog hair follicles. To be honest, this has been the hardest step for me as it's quite difficult to avoid the brow area when applying products. Tip: Dot foundation or moisturizer on sparingly and gently blend with your fingertips (instead of a brush). This will make it easier to know where you're spreading product.
    2. Exfoliate. This makes total sense as exfoliating dead skin can help promote hair growth in dormant follicles. Use a facial exfoliant and be sure to include all around the eyebrow area.
    3. Don't pluck. Sounds crazy, right? But if you're growing in your brows, keep the tweezers hidden away for several weeks. Train yourself to not look in the macro mirror and this growing-out phase will be much more manageable.

I also learned to use a soft pencil (Sania recommends Paul & Joe Dual Crayon) to fill in your brows and gently brush with a clean mascara wand to soften any harsh lines. This will keep your brows looking clean and polished while the tiny hairs are growing back in.
