  • PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - Prime Minister Hun Sen reiterated Thursday that the victory over the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot in 1979 resulted from cooperation between Cambodian and Vietnamese soldiers.

Speaking in Kompong Thom two days ahead of the the 33rd anniversary of the liberation of Phnom Penh, Hun Sen said that the January 7 victory belonged to all Cambodians and represented the sacrifices made by Cambodian soldiers with support from the Vietnamese.

Some opposition politicians and activists still consider the 1979 liberation as the start of a Vietnamese "occupation" of Cambodia even though Vietnam withdrew its troops in 1989.
