  • PHNOM PENH - Deputy Prime Minister Sok An on Friday hailed the life sentence given to former Khmer Rouge prison chief Kaing Guek Eav, also known as Duch, as an historical success for Cambodia.

"I believe that the public will find that the final judgement is fair and just. Today is seen as an historical day for the Cambodian people and all human beings across the world," he told reporters as he left the courtroom of the UN-backed Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).

"For the survivors of S-21 prison, the families of the victims and the victims who were killed and could not see the trial, the judgment today will reduce the pain, sadness and hardship they experienced," he added.

"This trial has taken a long time since 1997. The road to reach today's judgement has been long and rocky. So today is a successful day as the Supreme Court Chamber in the ECCC pronounced the final judgement."
