PHNOM PENH - Ukrainian prosecutors have ordered the owner of a Cambodia-registered cargo vessel to pay $3.4 million in damages for polluting the Black Sea, the Ukrainian News Agency reported.

The report late Monday said the request was sent from the Crimean Prosecutor's Office to the local economic court. The owner of the ship was identified as Ibrahim Yakim.

"The basis for a measure of civil response was the failure to fulfill the obligation to address the damage inflicted on the environment as a result of the pollution of the sea by the violator of the rules of navigation," the prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, more than 10 tons of petroleum products were released into the sea after the ship ran aground near Cape Tarkhankut on December 17, 2010, while traveling from Mykolaiv to Turkey.

The 15-member crew of 12 Syrians and 3 Indians managed to reach the shore on a life raft, the report said. source
