Aakash, a tablet that is proudly made in India and has proven to be one of the cheapest tablets to date, will be getting a sequel that is unimaginatively called the Aakash 2. This new tablet too, will be announced by the government, although according to Telecom and HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, Datawind will no longer manufacture the Aakash 2, but rather, C-DAC and ITI will be involved in further development of the tablet device. Sibal says, “There have been some problem with Datawind I must confess. Therefore, I have got into the act. IT Ministry has got C-DAC and ITI into the act and I am going to ensure that this product is fully indigenous and truly an Indian product.”
The Aakash 2 will most probably retail for $49 thereabouts, maintaining a similar price range as that of its predecessor, albeit with upgraded and improved parts within. The main aim of the Aakash 2 would be to deliver a quality device to the kids, and competition from the market for development of the tablet is always more than welcome. After all, it ensures that everyone is kept on their toes, and consumers would be the ones who win out in the end. It would be interesting to see how the Aakash 2 fare should it be exported worldwide.
