If you ask the Chinese magnate that bought the pigeon, the rat with wings was definitely the better buy.

According to an “international pigeon auction house” (which is apparently a real thing), Zhen Yu Hu, a Chinese shipping magnate, dropped the hefty sum of money on the bird.

The bird was put up for auction by Pigeon Paradise, or PIPA, a Belgium-based company that supposedly deals exclusively in pigeons.

The bird was put up for auction, along with 244 others, by Pieter Veenstra, who lives in the Dutch village of Drachtstercompagnie.

So why did Hu buy the bird? He’s a member of a South China pigeon racing group.

Yes, that is also a thing.

Pigeon racing is apparently a celebrated sport, with Chinese buyers being noted as especially interested in the sport, most notably in recent years.

The record-setting pigeon bought by Mr. Hu beats the previous record of $225,000.

Euro Diamond, an eight-year old Flemish pigeon with a name that sounds like it belongs to a porn star, was known for its long flights when it was sold for the hefty sum in 2010.
