Government advisor optimistic about Cambodia's engagement with Asian Community from 2015

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Weekly) - Government advisor Sok Siphana says that Cambodia's participation in the Asian Community from 2015 will bring more economic advantages than disadvantages, Rasmei Kampuchea reported Thursday.

"The forecast over the past 10 years that Cambodia will face a lot of challenging issues when entering the Asian Community is a pessimistic view," he reportedly said, expressing confidence that the Cambodian private sector would be able to compete. "Don't forget that today we have an auto assembly plant in the country and our light industry will continue to exist in the future."

The former secretary of state at the Ministry of Commerce said that engagement with the Asian Community in 2015 was a "positive sign for both Cambodian people and the country, and is also an opportunity to seek mutual partnerships."

"Once the Asian Community is established, Cambodia will have a market of not only 14 million," he said, noting that Cambodia could export to neighboring countries Vietnam, Thailand and Laos "without any trade or customs barriers anymore."

The newspaper said Sok Siphana was not concerned about human resource constraints. "Cambodia now has 20,000 positions for  company executive directors, so we need more technical training courses," he was quoted as saying.
