PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - A Vietnamese government survey of sex workers has found that male prostitutes with female clients earn the most, Tuoi Tre News reported Friday.

"Male prostitutes earn highest. They usually hunt for clients, who are rich middle-aged women, at restaurants, bars or nightclubs," the newspaper said.

The report said they were paid from 800,000 dong ($38) to 2.5 million dong ($120) per session, compared with only 100,000 dong ($5) to 150,000 ($7.50) for gay male escorts.

Conducted by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the survey covered 189 men and 199 women working as sex workers in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Hai Phong.

More than three quarters of the sex workers were under 25, while 18 percent were between 16-18 and four percent under 15.

Average monthly incomes for sex workers were found to be 8.6 million dong ($412), two and a half times higher than the median income of 20 percent of the highest income earners.

The report said most sex workers in the survey were educated with 50 percent having junior high school diplomas and several boasting university degrees.

"Men volunteer for sex work not only to get high income, but also to meet their sexual desires in a country where many people are not open-minded towards sex or homosexuality," the report said. "A few people surveyed said they agreed to prostitute themselves to self-actualize their egos."

The report noted that prostitution was illegal in Vietnam.
