December 8, 2011-A study by scientists at the University of Bath claim that just one minute of exercise a day can lower the risk of contracting diabetes.
The study claims that three short sprints a week can prevent and even treat type 2 diabetes.
Scientists followed volunteers who were asked to perform 20 second cycle sprints three times a week.
The study which continued for six weeks discovered 28% improvement in the insulin levels of their volunteers.
Regular exercise can counteract the effects of type 2 diabetes as it helps to control blood sugars.
However 66% of the population are not getting this level of exercise due to hectic lifestyles.
Dr Niels Vollaard, lead author of the study said: “Intense sprint training can improve insulin sensitivity but we wanted to see if the exercise sessions could be made easier and shorter.”
Cycling bikes were used to increase the resistance of the equipment for each workout. The volunteers were exercising for a shorter time but at higher intensities.
The study is now being extended with more volunteers to determine whether the exercise time could be shortened again.
