SIEM REAP (Cambodia Herald) - ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan said foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations discussed Wednesday how to make ASEAN more engaged internationally, focusing on North Korea, Myanmar and the Middle East.
"The ASEAN foreign ministers discussed regional and international issues, North Korea, Myanmar and the Middle East.
"They discussed issues which can have impacts on ASEAN and issues that ASEAN can make positive contributions to make ASEAN higher profile and more engaging in the international arena," he said.
One source said the ministers also discussed how to support Myanmar as it prepares to take over the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2014.
Surin said the foreign ministers discussed the South China Sea, a sensitive issue in which ASEAN is required to have a common position.
He said the discussion was "very productive, very frank and very candid."
