Is anything more annoying than having an itch that just doesn’t seem to be satisfied by some gentle scratching? Scratching away at your scalp often appears to be particularly unattractive, as people commonly associate that with illness or lack of cleanliness.
There are a number of reasons why an itchy scalp may occur, but most of them can be easily treated.
If you do think that there may be a serious underlying medical condition that is causing your scalp to itch incessantly, definitely do go and seek professional advice from your doctor.
Get it Clean
If your hair is dirty, this can easily be a cause for your scalp to itch and itch. Any build up of dirt and oils can clog the pores in our scalp, which causes for the skin to itch. Wash your hair every other day or even every day if your hair does tend to get dirty easily or if it is particularly oily, and opt for shampoo products that have a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. This will keep that scalp of yours happy and hydrated.
To Those who Dye their Hair
Whether you use a boxed dye or visit the salon, it is quite possible that you will go home with a slightly itchy scalp afterwards. While this is common, having a constant itch or one that you absolutely cannot help but scratch is not. If this does become an issue for you, either choose to have streaks put in your hair rather than dye your entire head (this helps eliminate the chance of the dye coming in contact with your scalp) or ask a salon about a soothing cream or lotion that you can use to help get rid of the itch.
What Hair Products are you Using?
Have you changed your hair products recently? Are the hair products you are using filled with chemicals? Hair products are often the reason why our scalp itches. You may very well be having an allergic reaction to a hair spray you are using, a shampoo, a gel – whatever you put in your hair, stop using them all together. Slowly introduce products back to your hair and see if any of them cause your scalp to itch. Introduce only one product at a time and use it for 3-7 days prior to introducing another product.
Is it Dandruff?
If you have white flakes falling from your head, then there’s a good chance that dandruff is the underlying cause behind your itchy scalp. Try using an over the counter shampoo that is medicated and will be able to treat and eliminate your dandruff.
It Might be a Sunburn
If you just spent the last few days out in the blazing heat and weren’t wearing a hat or standing the shade, there’s a good chance that your scalp is actually suffering from a sun burn. This is also commonly mistaken from dandruff as the scalp skin flakes off. If this is the case, you should notice that after the date of exposure your scalp should be itch-free within a matter of days.
