CARACAS, February 28, 2012 (AFP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has undergone surgery in Cuba to remove a potentially cancerous lesion and is in "good condition," Vice President Elias Jaua said Tuesday.
The operation "took place according to plan, and the result was satisfactory, after which a recovery plan has been programmed to take place in the next days," said Jaua.
"President Chavez is in good physical condition," Jaua said.
The surgery was to remove a lesion from the same pelvic area where Cuban doctors cut out a cancerous tumor last year.
The possible return of Chavez's cancer has cast doubt over his bid to be re-elected on October 7, in what is likely to be the most closely contested presidential election in years.
Chavez, 57, who remains the active-duty president while away from Venezuela, has been in power since 1999.
