  • Cambodia’s rice exporting remains positive as the global economy recession has slightly affected the major exporting product of the country’s economy, commerce officials said. The product of the milled rice “white gold” will be able to be exported to one million ton in 2015.
“So far, Cambodia exported over 300,000 tons of milled rice product, and we still find further international markets to buy our product, but the matter is that, we just can’t’ meet their demands,” H.E. Cham Prasidh, Senior Minister, Minister of Commerce told Reporters at the 6th Cambodia Import-Export Products and one Village One Product exhibition 2011 Plus ACMECS (Ayeyawady-Chaophraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy) to be held from15-18 December 2011 at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Center in Phnom Penh.
The minister added: Now our rice exports have reached EU, U.S.A, and to other places, we don’t have problem with the rice markets. “ China is ready to absorb all our rice production, but we can’t meet their requirements as only a single type of rice is demanded, and with high quality-large quantity,” he emphasized. “Standardized package and shipment are the major obstacles crippling our products to reach international markets,” the minister raised concerns.
“ Singapore is a small country but it is the global milled rice wholesaler. Singapore orders us about half million tons of rice product for once time, but we just can’t meet their needs,” the minister points out. “ Japan lately also is interested in purchasing our milled rice products.”
The Minister also explored the market opportunities in Dubai , and other Arab states; and found that they preferred buying broken rice from Cambodia . “So we can sell high quality of milled rice product to major markets, and offered broken milled rice for them.” At the same time, the export of paddy rice product occurred anarchically to the neighbors, the minister agreed about that issue. “It is a great lose for Cambodia , but now the government encourages more buyers to buy all paddy rice products from the local farmers.” The minister said, adding that we don’t have enough investors to make business on the rice mill. “When farmers enjoy with their harvest, they will produce more.” But, the minister emphasizes, as soon as the country is installed enough investments in rice mill, the paddy rice exports to the neighbors will be postponed.
The minister continued: “while the price of Thailand ’s rice product increased doubly due to their severe flooding, it is a golden opportunity for Cambodia ’s rice producers to compete and penetrate into the international markets.”
He highlighted that to facilitate the country’s rice production, the government is building infrastructure to deliver products, construct irrigation system to support water to the rice plantation to grow rice paddies for more than once cultivation per year, and introduce technologies to maximize productivity.
“Now we encourage the rice producers to grow rice paddies to implement high demand at the markets and expand the quantity of the preferred type at markets,” Minister said, adding that while the EU economic crisis, Cambodia ’s milled rice exports there are still in good trend, it is the main market to absorb Cambodia ’s agro-products and textiles.
“Despites they are poorer due to the crisis, they can still purchase our products,” the minister noted, adding that “In 2011, we still exported to EU with an increase of more than 30 percent if comparing to last year,” he said. “Only bilateral trade in textile alone valued more than $400 million already, excluding rice.”
Cambodia has surplus of four million tons of rice product this year, totally the country harvested about the 8 million tons of rice product. a kilo of milled rice costs about hald dollaer to one dollar in the country.
Thailand, annually exported about 2.5 million tons of ‘Malis’ milled rice product equal to 55,000 million Thai baht, and overall, Thailand can exports to about 10 million tons every year, according to Smith Totiemsri, Manager, C.P. Inter-trade Co., Ltd.

Minister of agriculture H.E Chan Sarun said this week that currently the country grows about over 180,000 hectares of rubber plants.
