The 6th annual Cambodia Import-Export Products and one Village One Product exhibition 2011 Plus ACMECS (Ayeyawady-Chaophraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy) were conducted from 15-18 December 2011 at Koh Pich center to boost the economic integration and prosperity of regional cooperation
This year, it has 262 companies with 376 booths from 17 countries were participated the event; those were the ACMECS member countries— Cambodia , Laos , Myanmar , Viet Nam , and Thailand , along with other partner countries: China , Japan , Korea , Italy , Indonesia , Singapore , Malaysia , England , the United States, and Philippines .
“We select only the exportable products from each province to showcase here, as they are potentially able to export after the business matching,” said H.E. Cham Prasidh, Senior Minister, Minister of Commerce said the opening ceremony. This time, the product showcased from local agricultural products from each provinces, machinery, handicraft, stationery, foods and drinks, daily consumables and household utensils, textile and garment, pharmaceutical products and cosmetics, electronics, construction materials, hotel services, education, tourism, banking, furniture and a lot of other investment schemes.
It has also business forums, meetings which were coincidently held along the 3 day event. In conjunction with the organizing of these two significant trade exhibitions, Cambodia ’s Commerce Ministry will also host a number of key trade forums, meetings and performances to sustain and ensure of these annual trade events.
Cambodia’s economic growth from cooperation
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, H.E. Keat Chhon presided over the opening ceremony said: “this exhibition not only offer opportunities for businessman, traders, producers and investors of all corners of the region to meet, seek and match business and investment partners, but also promote and deepen international trade and cooperation under ACMECS framework among its five member countries in all sectors.”
“I am optimistic the trade even will contribute to the realizing vision ‘five nations, one economy’ for long-term economic development,” Minister Keat Chhon said.
The inclusion of ACMECS Exhibition into the 6th Cambodia Import-Export Products and One Province One Product exhibition 2011 is right-in-time of newly created Chinese-ASEAN free trade Area, further strengthening co-operation of the ACMECS member countries and good prospect of economic recovery of our region despite the impact of international financial crisis, he asserts.
“ACMECS will act as a strong catalyst to activate existing co-operation programs in the region, and supplement the bilateral framework in order to transform the border areas of the five countries into the areas of economic growth, prosperity and social progress,” he said. Adding , “And to incorporate together the lofty national and regional impression for the sake of sharing mutual interest, progress, solidarity, peace, stability and good neighborliness.”
According to Minister of Economy and Finance, since 1993, Cambodia’s DGP (in current price) has increased by around five folds from $2.4 billion to $11.6 billion in 2010, while per capita income increased by more than three folds from $229 to $830. Poverty rate was nailed down from 47 percent in 1993 to 30 percent in 2007 and 25.8 percent in 2010. In line with this trend, Cambodia shall achieve the Millenniums Target-poverty rate will drop below 19.5 percent.
Suffering from the severe flooding, 2011 Economic growth might rise by more than 6.4 percent in temporary figuring against earlier projection of 6 percent, he stressed.
Cambodia trade also plays an important role in both import and export and achieved two digits growth in 2010.
The trade figures for import and export in 2010 were $12 billion, an increase of 17.9 percent over 2009, in which the total trade figures were only $10.177 billion. The imports rose to $6.8 billion over 2009, which netted only $5.87 billion in total. As for the exports, the total trade figures rose from $4.3 billion to $5.2 billion year-on-year, he added.
he raised, the ten-month trade figures of 2011 were about $9.175 billion, 25.3 percent rise against the same period of 2010, in which the Cambodian exports were worth about $4.01 billion, 32.7 percent up against the same period of 2011 and its imports from foreign countries were worth around $5.16 billion, 20.10 percent up against the same period of 2011.
“Our outstanding local products to show off to those visitors are rice, handicraft, text tile, they are minor things, but significantly important,” H.E. Keat Chhon told Reporters after the expo opening ceremony.
The ACMECS Trade Exhibition was an initiative proposed for the first time in the ACMECS Summit on November 10th, 2010 in Phnom Penh, this initiative required all the member countries to organize a trade exhibition within the ACMECS framework once annually in each of the member countries, said H.E. Cham Prasidh, Minister of Commerce.
“Responding to this proposal, Cambodia decided to hold this ACMECS exhibition 2011 first in the Phnom Penh capital, he stated reason to host the expo.
