According to the data from the Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia attracted around 2.8 million inbound tourists to visit thekingdom in 2011 with a 14 percent rise against 2010 as the count was about 2.5 million. Among the 2.8 million, 1.4 million gathered at the Kingdom’s major attraction and world class tourism destination and home of ancient of Angkor wat temple— Siem Reap province representing 55 percent, whereas the other 45 percent visitation were seen elsewhere in the country which is a potential for eco-tourism and cultural tourism resorts.
“About 190,000 tourists toured at the four coastal provinces,” Kong Sophearak, Director of Statistics Department of Ministry of Tourism told SEAW on January 4. Phnom Penh is also an attractive place for foreign visitors. He said about 60,000 international tourists visited Preah Sihanouk Ville alone during the 3-day First ever Kingdom’s Sea Festival to honor this country’s beautiful bays where stretched 440 Km along the four provinces: Phreah Sihanouk Ville, Kampot, Kep, and Koh Kong provinces.
He, anyway, said that the figure of 2011 revenue, local tourists, and outbound tourists, can’t be specified yet, saying that, “We are working on the data gathering, and calculation; hopefully in the next month. The data will be ready to be released.” He predicted that Cambodia, in 2012, would receive about 3.1 million tourist arrivals with an increase of 12-15 percent if compared to 2011.”
“ The growth of foreign visitors this year after the country has more political stability, more effective marketing and promotion of Kingdom of Wonders, more convenient traveling documentation, and the constant opening of direct flights from different destinations.” he stressed. The major destinations such as France and Korea have connecting direct flights and the enhancement of security, good services, hygiene and safety at the sites are playing very important roles for the tourism industry,” said Kong Sophearak.
Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism announced previously earlier year that it would absorb 2.8 million tourist at the end of 2011, arriving at 4.5 million in 2015, and to the minimum of 7 million in 2020 which will generate US$5 billion in 2020, contributing to around 10 percent of the nation’s GDP and the tourism industry will create 1 million jobs for the people. Vietnamese tourists stand at the top row for tourist arrivals in the Kingdom while the two countries had visa exemption for two weeks. The country also has a visa exemption policy with other countries in ASEAN.
The government is enhancing the promotion of the tourism industry while it is one of the pillars of economic growth in the Kingdom. The industry directly offered benefits for local people in reducing poverty.
