PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - Cambodia kicked off its Senate election campaign Saturday with the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) staging a big noisy parade and the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SPP) gathering at the party's headquarters.
Tep Nitha, the secretary general of the National Election Committee, said that the first day of the campaign went smoothly. "We didn't notice any irregularity or problem," he said,
While the CPP campaign launch was almost nationwide, the biggest event was in Phnom Penh with a long line of motorcycles, cars, vans and trucks with flags, posters, music and loudspeakers.
Yim Sovan, the SRP spokesman, said the opposition party had no parade. "We're just having a gathering at the headquarters," he said.
The campaign lasts 21 days before the January 29 election for 57 senators.
