According to thesoutheastasiaweekly - Cambodia is preparing to host the asean defense ministers’meeting and asean defense ministers plus to strengthen regional cooperation.
At the first Phnom Penh strategic forum on Cambodia’s role in promoting security cooperation in the name of the host of asean defense ministers’ meeting and other meetings in 2012, General Tea Banh, deputy prime minister and minister of national defense
said: “I strongly believe that today’s forum will discuss on question and elaboration on the roles and responsibilities of Cambodia in promoting cooperation and building a regional security architecture without confrontation, but cooperation to cope with non-traditional security for the common interest.”

“I hope that today’s discussion will present experience on organizing ADMM shared by friendly countries in asean , with this we are able to see Cambodia, in the name of host admm and other meetings in 2012, will perform its duty successfully.”
“There is a need of preventive diplomacy mechanism and the creation of an effective dispute resolution mechanism to maintain peace and stability in the region,” he said.
The transformation has highlighted major events such as asean defense ministers’ meeting (ADMM), asean defense minister’s meeting plus (ADMM), ASEAN regional forum (ARF) along with security expert working group meetings as well as other relevant meetings.
Cambodia has transformed itself from a nation receiving peace keeping forces to a nation sending peacekeeping forces, from a nation victimized by landmines to a leading nation in anti-landmines campaign in the globe, and from the in house security focus nation to outward defense diplomacy and cooperation particularly in the context of asean.
He added: “The security issue, we have got a great success from admm plus that fulfill its duty in accordance with its goal to tackle all problems. There might be some issues such as the roles and responsibilities of regional mechanism and superpowers including the US, china, India, Russia, and Japan… in regional security. “
He noted: The meeting of ADMM contributes strengthening work of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, maritime security cooperation, peacekeeping operation, security sector governance and security sector forum.
Nhim Sovat, director general of policy and foreign affairs of defense ministry said: I do hope this first Phnom Penh strategic forum will contribute to the establishment of the harmonization triangle between peace, development, and development through open discussion between experienced speakers and scholars from Singapore, Vietnam, China, US, India, and Cambodia.”
