  • PHNOM PENH  - Cambodian journalists met Tuesday to discuss press freedom in Cambodia.

"Information is like oxygen which is vital for life. I urge journalists to join hands to promote  press freedom and freedom of expression," said Chok Sopheap from the Cambodian Center for Human Rights.

Pen Samitthy, president of the Club of Cambodian Journalists and editor of chief of Rasmei Kampuchea, noted that press freedom involved legal, political, and economic issues.

Nguon Serath, political editor of Rasmei Kampuchea, said media ownership could also have impacts on press freedom in Cambodia, noting that media conglomerates were starting to emerge, affecting the way news is distributed.

He added that economic pressures were more important than political ones. Some businesses exert pressure by threatening to withdraw advertising from which publish or broadcast materials harmful to their interests, affecting the free flow of information, he said. source
