PHNOM PENH – Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) has received a license to explore for minerals in Preah Vihear province, a Council of Ministers spokesman said Monday.

Ek Tha, spokesman for the Quick Reaction Unit, told reporters that Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, who is also minister in charge of the Office of the Council Ministers, asked the Japanese government corporation to be cautious since the province had more than 200 temples.

The spokesman said Sok An also highlighted the province's environmental importance.

“Please be careful and conservative because Preah Vihear province is not only minerals and tourism but also the habitat of some endangered animals," he was quoted as telling JOGMEC chief executive Akira Suzuki during a courtesy call Monday.

Suzuki promised to follow the advice and respect the rules and regulations of the Cambodian government, the spokesman said.

JOGMEC is among an estimated 128 companies with mineral exploration licenses in 18 provinces. source
