PHNOM PENH – Vietnam's Tram Chim National near Prey Veng province is about to be recognized as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, Tuoi Tre News reported Monday.
The report said that "nearly all" members of the convention’s secretariat had reached an agreement to recognize the park in Dong Thap province which is located about 20 kilometers from the Cambodian border,
“The Secretariat is completing final formalities to announce Tram Chim National Park as a world Ramsar site in the coming days” Nguyen Duc Tu, water and wetlands coordinator of the International Union for Conservation of Nature in Vietnam, was quoted as saying.
The report said the national park would become Vietnam’s fourth Ramsar site. The park is particularly well known for the Sarus crane (Grus antigone), a vulnerable bird species which is also found in Cambodia around the Tonle Sap Lake. The population in Cambodia and Vietnam is considered separate from the population in Myanmar and China. source
