Tep Nitha, secretary general of the NEC, said opposition parties often claimed the NEC was not independent, seeking a change in its membership.
“It’s not our duty to change our members,” he said, noting that NEC members were assigned by law.
“The NEC always invites and is open to both national and international observers to observe the election process. This is a positive sign,” he said.
His comments came after the HRP, the junior opposition party in the National Assembly, urged the United Nations and foreign donors "to pay considerable attention" to commune council elections in June.
