According to some research I came across recently the number 1 purpose for using the internet in Cambodia is browsing and surfing. And the most popular topics are still music and entertainment.
Unlike the rest of the world – which appears to have gone mad for social media – in Cambodia we are still using the web to listen to music and catch up on the latest entertainment trends. Chatting and keeping in touch is still taking a backseat to singing and dancing.
Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that Facebook is not making its mark. In fact it is. Social media is listed as the number 1 reason why Cambodia’s 15-19 year olds use the internet.
So, what does this mean for Cambodia? Well, here at Ezecom we believe that this means that there is huge potential for growth. After all Cambodia’s average internet user is a teenager or a twenty-something city dweller with access to a computer - either at work or at school. And as the country develops this demographic will increase. This in turn will pave the wave for more usage.
And as for internet habits? Well, we at Ezecom also believe that the social media will become an increasingly important driver for internet communications. More and more teenagers will gravitate to social media sites to communicate with their friends and as they grow older the ‘Facebook habit’ will stay with them – as will their zest for entertainment.
Entertainment on the internet will start to evolve and increase. There will be Internet TV, blockbuster movies and gaming - to name just a few. And they will all be available at the click of a mouse.
At home the internet will be used for more than just communicating. Soon people will be using the internet to pay their bills, read their books, work and study. It is all part of the digital age - and Cambodia's future.
So what us ordinary Cambodians do to prepare for Cambodia’s digital future? Nothing. For the moment just keep having fun - online of course…
