  • SIEM REAP (Cambodia Herald) - Senior officials from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations met Tuesday to prepare for a retreat by ASEAN foreign ministers.

"As chair of ASEAN, Cambodia will try its best to host ASEAN summits and other related-meetings successfully to make further progress toward the establishment of ASEAN community by 2015," said Soeung Rathchavay, the secretary of state of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation who was chairing the meeting.

The agenda for the meeting included preparations for Wednesday's retreat as well as issues to be raised and documents to be adopted by ministers.

Security was tight ahead of the ASEAN meetings with 1,450 police, military police and soldiers deployed at the airport and eight hotels.

The meetings, which come ahead of a summit of ASEAN leaders in Phnom Penh on April 3 and 4, are expected to cover issues such as overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea and increasing "connectivity" between the 10 member countries.
