Britain surpasses Korea as biggest foreign investor in Cambodia in 2011

PHNOM PENH  - Britain surpassed South Korea as the biggest foreign investor in Cambodia last year with $2.24 billion committed to two projects, the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) said. 

CDC said British companies invested $2.22 billion on a nitrogen chemical and fertilizer venture and $16.1 million on a garment factory.

Overall, CDC said it approved 164 investments worth $7.01 billion. After British investors, Cambodian investors led with $1.93 billion followed by China with $1.19 billion, Vietnam with $631 million and Hong Kong with $330 million.

Apart from Nitrogen Chemical and Fertilizer Cambodia Ltd, the biggest investors were the Cambodian-Chinese venture Shukaku Erdos Hongjun Property Development Co Ltd with $2.1 billion, Xinwei Cambodia Telecom Co Ltd with $466 million, Hong Kong Premium Investments Ltd with $225 million and Tan Sri Chen Inc from Malaysia with $206 million. 
 
In 2010, CDC said, registered investments totalled $2.6 billion, led by South Korea, Chinese, Vietnam and Malaysia.
